Budgeting for a self-guided TMB
Your Tour du Mont Blanc budget depends on how many days you hike, where you sleep and how you eat along the trail.
Mountain huts, village hotels, campgrounds and permitted bivouac locations create very different costs. This guide breaks down the choices so you can build a realistic estimate for your group, then turn that budget into an itinerary you can actually plan and book.

Understand the estimate
What does the TMB hiking budget include?
Start with the costs you will face during your days on the trail. Then add the travel and personal expenses that depend on where you are coming from and how you choose to hike.
Included in the cost estimate
- Overnight accommodation or camping costs
- Breakfast during your hiking days
- Lunch based on your preferred approach
- Dinner, including required half-board where applicable
Budget separately
- Flights and travel to your TMB starting point
- Airport transfers and local transport
- Snacks, drinks and personal spending
- Travel insurance, equipment and optional baggage transport
A cost estimate is a planning guide, not a booking quote. Accommodation prices and availability vary by property, room type and date. Confirm the final cost with each provider before booking.
The choices behind your budget
Why TMB costs vary between hikers
Two groups can hike for the same number of days and spend very different amounts. These are the choices that have the greatest effect on your on-trail budget.
Your overnight stops
A TMB itinerary may combine mountain-hut dormitories, private rooms, village accommodation, campgrounds and permitted bivouac locations. You cannot assume that your preferred type is available or permitted at every stop, so budget for the mix your route actually requires.
Meals included with accommodation
Some mountain huts offer or require half-board, typically covering dinner and breakfast. Others provide a room-only rate or give you more choice. Check what each quoted accommodation price includes before adding a separate meal cost.
Lunch and independent meals
Buying food from a bakery or supermarket, ordering a packed lunch from your accommodation and eating at a café can produce different daily totals. Your options also depend on the villages and huts along each stage.
Route, duration and group size
Your number of hiking days determines how many nights and meals you need. The route determines where those nights fall. A private room shared by two hikers can have a very different per-person cost from the same room booked by a solo hiker.

Beyond your on-trail estimate
Other Tour du Mont Blanc costs to consider
The accommodation and meal estimate is only part of your full trip budget. Add the expenses that apply to your starting point, travel plans and preferences.
Travel to the region
Allow for flights or trains to the Alps, plus any nights you spend in the region before or after your hike.
Getting to your trailhead
Airport transfers, buses, trains and cable cars depend on your start and end points. Compare TMB starting points and explore transport to and from the trail .
Snacks and drinks
Add a daily allowance for food between meals, café stops and drinks at the end of the day.
Travel insurance
Check that your policy suits your planned activities, destinations and any route alternatives you intend to hike.
Equipment
Review the gear you already own before budgeting for footwear, layers, navigation equipment or camping supplies.
Optional luggage transfer
Prices and coverage depend on your overnight stops and the provider. Some remote huts cannot receive luggage. Read our TMB luggage transfer guide before adding this service to your budget.
The most useful budget starts with an achievable route. Compare TMB itinerary templates before finalising the number of nights, travel connections and accommodation style you need.
